About Smallsquare

Hi, I’m James.

I started Smallsquare with the goal of providing top-tier design and marketing strategy for even the smallest businesses. As a marketer, I’ve got 7+ years experience in B2B and B2C across industries including tech, telecommunications, and more.

Our mission

Historically, things like automation, advanced data analytics, and massive reach were things that only the largest companies with the deepest pockets could take advantage of. Over the past decade, the rise of social media and the proliferation of powerful marketing tools have blown the doors open on powerful marketing.

De-centralized marketing agency

What does that even mean?

We don’t have a large team, and the overhead that comes with it. We rely on our network of freelancers and marketing professionals, and find the best person for each project. That means we only take on the projects where we feel we’re a good fit, and we can focus on being a true partner, not just a vendor.

What we do

Marketing is broad, and it means different things for different businesses. That’s one of the reasons we love having the ability to bring in experts.

Marketing principles

  • Do a few things really well, not many things poorly.

It’s tempting, especially in marketing, to want to do everything. We refer to this as Shiny Object Syndrome, the tendency we all have to be distracted and enticed by the latest “shiny object” – and suddenly we have to have it or use it – because it's new and different.

  • A goal without a plan is just a wish.

Strategic planning is critical to the execution of marketing initiatives, and execution is everything. The importance of a plan can’t be understated, and yet it’s often skipped. Define your goals, create a plan, measure your results, and re-evaluate. This formula generates success.

  • Focus on the customer.

The centre of the universe isn’t your website, or social media account, or your product. It’s customer experience. Businesses today compete primarily on the basis of CX, but few prioritize it. By putting the customer first in the decision-making process, you’ll be able to deliver an incredible customer experience.
